The Algerian women’s volleyball team will compete for the first time at the Olympic Games. After winning the continental Olympic qualification tournament sustained at home, the Algerian players have obtained their ticket for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Eight nations out of a total of 12 will be making the Olympic journey. The Algerians will be joining China, Italy, Brazil, the USA, Venezuela, Cuba and the Russian Federation. The four remaining places will be allocated at the Asian continental tournament and the world Olympic qualifying tournament taking place in Tokyo (Japan) from 17 to 25 May. The best three teams and the best Asian team will then go to Beijing.

Volleyball competitions at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will be held from August 9, 2008 to August 24, 2008. Indoor volleyball events will be held at Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium. Beach volleyball competitions will be held at the Beach Volleyball Ground at Chaoyang Park.
4 sets of medals will be awarded in following events:
- Volleyball Men (12 teams)
- Volleyball Women (12 teams)
- Beach Volleyball Men (24 teams)
- Beach Volleyball Women (24 teams)

The events programme for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is quite similar to that of the Athens Games held in 2004. The 2008 Olympics will see the return of 28 sports, and will hold 302 events (165 men’s events, 127 women’s events, and 10 mixed events), one more event in total than in Athens.The following are the sports to be contested at the games (The number of events to be contested in each sport is indicated in parentheses):
